Top 10 Classic Rock Road Trip Songs

Top 10 Classic Rock Road Trip Songs

Now that summer is here, it’s time to think about hitting the road. And every road trip needs a great soundtrack. To get you started, here are my Top 10 must-have road trip songs.

10. Golden Earring – Radar Love

Why it’s a must have: A steady rhythm, sing-along lyrics, and fun bass line make it perfect for a long trip.

Best Lyric: The road has got me hypnotized / And I’m speedin’ into a new sunrise

9. Stone Temple Pilots – Interstate Love Song

Why it’s a must-have: Maybe it’s the title, but I always want this song when I’m hitting the road. Maybe it the scratchy vocals, or that an entire line of the song is just the word “Goodbye”. Or maybe it’s that STP is a fuel additive as well as a band so when I think of one I think of the other. Who knows?

Best Lyric: Goodbye

8. Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody

Why it’s a must-have: Ok, so this song has nothing to do with driving or being on the road or traveling, but it is a must when you are road tripping. It’s a song you turn all the way up and then sing out at the top of your lungs.  Your passengers will be belting along, too.

Best Lyric: Any way the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me

7. Sammy Hagar – I Can’t Drive 55

Why it’s a must-have: The banging drums start this song out with style, and you know that when you hear this song, you’re going to have a hard time sticking to the speed limit. With it’s catchy lyrics and put-the-accelerator-to-the-floor tune, it’s one you’ve gotta have.

Best Lyric: When I drive that slow, you know it’s hard to steer / And I can’t get my car out of second gear.

6. Foghat – Slow Ride

Why it’s a must-have: Sure, this song may be laced with sexual innuendo, but it’s also a great song for when you’re out cruising with your friends. From the opening drum beats, to the final guitar resolve, this song is 8 minutes of cruising down main fun.

Best Lyric: Move to the music / We can roll all night

5. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Running Down A Dream

Why it’s a must-have: There are literally dozens of Petty songs that could make this list. But Running Down A Dream has catchy music, memorable lyrics, and upbeat tone that all combine to make this a perfect feel-good driving song.

Best Lyric: I felt so good, like anything was possible / I hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes

4. Led Zeppelin – Ramble On

Why it’s a must-have: Because it’s Led Zeppelin

Best Lyric: Got no time for spreadin’ roots / The time has come to be gone

3. Metallica – Wherever I May Roam

Why it’s a must-have: Heavy guitar chords, variable tempos, and electric sitar riffs all work to make this song perfect for when you’re behind the wheel. Just try not to headbang while you’re driving.

Best Lyric: Rover, wanderer, nomad, vagabond, call me what you will… And I’ll redefine anywhere

2. Steppenwolf – Born To Be Wild

Why it’s a must-have: Because in the back of your mind, you are a rebel. Hitting the road with this song makes you feel the freedom of the road, even if you are driving the mini-van.

Best Lyric: Lookin’ for adventure / And whatever comes our way

1. Motley Crue – Kickstart My Heart

Why it’s a must-have: Great guitar hook, and lyrics that make you want to go on an adventure. This one is a fun, upbeat song that will have you belting out “Whoa! Yeah!”

Best Lyric: Adrenaline rushing through my veins / And I’d say we’re still kickin’ ass
