Today would have been the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby, but due to the coronavirus, it has been postponed until September 5th, 2020. The only other time that it’s been postponed in it’s history was at the end of World War II. Normally, this is the weekend I would put on a wild hat, drink some juleps, and watch an entire day of pagentry for 2 minutes of horse racing.
Of course, I still plan on watching the Derby in September, but that’s no reason not to enjoy a Mint Julep today, right? If you’re looking for a little more history of the Mint Julep’s relationship with the Kentucky Derby, click here.
When you read this recipe, you may be thinking “Isn’t this basically an excuse to drink A LOT of bourbon?” And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. But the mint adds subtle flavors, and the crushed ice makes it cold and easy to drink.
Mint Julep:
3 oz. Kentucky Bourbon
3/4 oz. simple syrup
3 mint leaves
Combine mint leaves (lightly bruised), simple syrup and bourbon. Pour over crushed ice (yes, crushed ice is a must!) Garnish with mint leaves and enjoy.
